Besides facing the normal challenges of the summer box office, “Battleship” has a cast full of young actors, like Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker and pop superstar Rihanna trying to prove their skills in a big-budget movie.

In the case of Rihanna, many skeptics turned their nose up at the idea of the singer making the crossover to acting, but her director on “Battleship,” Peter Berg, told MTV News at New York’s Toy Fair that she was a natural.

“She was great,” he said. “She has a very strong part.”

Berg insisted that Rihanna’s casting was not as unorthodox as many may have thought, citing a whole host of singers who act. He has even had personal experience helping performers make the transition.”I’ve always believed in musicians as actors. I had great success with Tim McGraw in ‘Friday Night Lights’ and ‘The Kingdom.’ Musicians have been acting since Frank Sinatra won an Oscar for ‘From Here to Eternity,’ ” Berg said. “Barbra Streisand, Kris Kristofferson, the late Whitney Houston, I thought, was tremendous in ‘The Bodyguard.’ As recently as Mariah Carey in ‘Precious,’ she was great.” The director thought it was only a matter of time before someone cast Rihanna in a film; he just wanted to be first. “I was surprised no one had ever thought to hire Rihanna,” he said. “I was a huge fan of her videos. Obviously she’s sexy, but she had this real intensity. I’m like, ‘Someone’s going to get her.’ “

When Berg initially met with Rihanna to talk about “Battleship,” it was her attitude that made a lasting impression on him.

“When I met with her, she came in a T-shirt and jeans, no makeup, very natural,” he said. “She was like, ‘Look, I want to be an actress. Don’t kiss my ass. Don’t lie to me. Push me. Treat me as you would any other actor. Help make me good.’ She is really, really good in ‘Battleship.’ “

Since RiRi is going to the UK later this week, she had an early 24th birthday party with family and close friends in Los Angeles. She tweeted:

“Lastnight was special!!! #Itsnotevenmybirthday”

A lady who worked at the party tweeted:

“She had an outfit similar to the cake. Except she had thigh high boots. #SheIsSexy!”

Rihanna will turn 24 on Monday, February 20, just a day before she attends the 2012 BRIT Awards in London.

Capturing the chemistry between Drake and Rihanna on the set of their new video wasn’t very hard, the director of the clip, Yoann Lemoine, told MTV News. The video for “Take Care” was shot during the Super Bowl.

“They seemed to be super close and that’s what I wanted for the video,” Lemoine, best known for directing Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” Taylor Swift’s “Back to December” and Mystery Jet’s “Dreaming of Another World,” told us. “They fit together pretty well so it was just easy.”

Lemoine said the three-day shoot — which took place in a studio as well as a park — had a “very minimal” and “mellow” vibe, even though the track itself is decidedly more upbeat.

“Visually, it’s a very humble video … it’s not crazy,” the alternative indie musician who also goes by the stage name Woodkid said. “It’s actually the most indie video I’ve done my whole life. It’s probably the most famous artists, and they were so open to a project that was so minimal. There’s a lot of space in the video and I wanted the visuals to pay tribute to that,” he continued. “It pays tribute to nature. When I listened to the track, I was seeing a landscape … involving animals and massive landscapes. I won’t say too much, but it’s very surprising that there are very few elements in it. It’s very simple but there’s this big sense of emptiness in it. It’s not narrative at all, and it involves animals.”

Henry Holland has talked about Rihanna and the Britsh TV show they’re working together:

‘She’s the coolest woman in the world. She looked so f***ing amazing at the Grammy’s!’ he says. ‘She knows what works on her; she never looks like she’s been dressed; [by a stylist] you can tell she loves fashion’.

So Henry’s about to start filming a new TV show for Sky Living with the body-baring one herself in her debut role as a TV exec. The show will feature ‘young aspiring fashion designers and stylists, who each week will be given assignments to design and style for a string of celebrities and musicians.’

Heading up the project alongside Mr Holland will be Nicola Roberts, singer, make-up entrepreneur, and regular “face” on Henner’s front row; ‘from my very first collection’. He explains that when Roberts wore a crochet maxi dress of his recently, it ‘instantly’ sold out ‘she sells clothes’ says Henry, with heavy emphasis.

The show, which starts on Sky Living this Autumn will give an insight into ‘how the stylist-designer-musician collaboration works; for cover shoots, for tour wardrobes, within an musician’s specific image.’ Henry, in case you forgot, left his career (all of 7 years ago) at teen magazine Bliss where he was Fashion Editor, to become a designer, so he understands both the styling and designing ends of showbiz. Of course, Henry’s client list is full of big name celebrities, and Rihanna has previously worn House of Holland; on her album sleeve and also on stage at the Capital Radio Summer Ball last year – but both those looks were ready to wear pieces that the star fell for and snatched straight from the catwalk. But Henry has also created custom looks for Kelis’ tour wardrobe – all hosiery body suits and metallic leather – and offers this advice to the show’s contestants; ‘it’s about creating something that fits within the musician’s brief and image, but it also has to stay true to your own aesthetic as a designer.’

And for the lucky unknown who can crack that, the prize will be to design Rihanna’s on-stage outfit for this year’s Wireless festival. Wow.

‘It was all Rihanna’s idea’ says Henry, explaining that Rihanna is the show’s Executive Producer, ‘so she really is my boss’.
