RD: First of all Rihanna fans would like to know how do you get to become Rihanna’s back up singer? How did you get to work with her?

I received a call for a private audition in LA. I found out a week later that I would be joining her on the road!

RD: How did you feel at the first live performance with Rihanna in front of thousands of fans?

My first performance with Rihanna was at the Grammy Awards in February this year. It was my first time ever attending the show and it was even more amazing to be there as a performer. I really got a feel for Rih and how great she is on stage. I couldn’t wait to start the tour with her.

Rihanna changes her radiant red hair often, thanks to her superstar hairstylist Ursula Stephen. So far, Stephen twisted Rihanna’s locks into corkscrew curls, a russet bob, straight and striking strands, and on Sunday, she returned the pop star to her tightly-cropped pixie for her Academy of Country Music Awards performance.

“We haven’t done a bob in a while, but the idea to go short was Rihanna’s,” Stephen told InStyle. “She texted me a couple days prior to the ACM Awards and said she wanted to do something short. She missed her face, and I did too!” As for her hair attitude? “We’re not committed to anything but having fun!”

When you’re a fashion chameleon like Rihanna, you keep your closet close — and your hairstylist even closer.

Stylelist.com caught up with the architect of RiRi’s ever-changing hair looks over breakfast at Norma’s in New York, where Ursula Stephen was catching a well-deserved breather after prepping her star client for a movie shoot, the Grammys and a music video for new single “S&M.”

“Rihanna had all kinds of crazy ideas for that video, and I went all out, buying like six different wigs, coloring them, cutting them. Music videos are usually my least favorite to do because there is so much pressure and such a rush, and then they wear the look for like two minutes. But this was a creative challenge for me, so I loved it,” Stephen told StyleList.

In fact, wigs are often behind the drastic and dramatic looks we see from Rihanna, according to Stephen. Not only do wigs style better with rollers and hot irons, but stylists like Stephen use wigs to preserve the health of their celeb clients’ hair, which would otherwise suffer irreparable damage.

Ursula Stephen, Rihanna’s hairstylist, has talked to HollywoodLife.com about RiRi’s current hair.

HL: How was the decision to go red made? Was it yours or Rihanna’s?
Ursula Stephen: It was actually a mutual decision we made together. We had just wanted to do it at different times, but, as it happened in the end, the timing was perfect and we decided to go for it!

HL:Are these extensions? If so, are they real or synthetic?
Ursula Stephen: We’re using real human hair extensions, which are colored. The process to install them is simple: they’re bonded onto her actual hair.

HL:How does she like them. Does she love the new look?
Ursula Stephen: She loves the whole new look, especially the color! It’s her new favorite thing.

HL: Will she have to have relaxers in the meantime? What products will you use to maintain her look?
Ursula Stephen: Rihanna will definitely get relaxers in the meantime.  I use Motions Silkening Shine Relaxer System to keep it sleek, shiny, and conditioned.

HL: What would you suggest to women who would like to copy her look? Any advice they can take to their stylist?
Ursula Stephen: My advice when coping someone’s look is always to make it your own! Work with your stylist to create a look that suits you and your personality. If you think this is a look that will suit you and your personality, then work with your stylist to create it!

Guitarist for Boston rockers Extreme called on to back pop-soul star Rihanna with more than words. Sarah Rodman from Globe Newspaper Company talked with the famous guitarist – Nuno Bettercourt – on his collaboration with our favourite pop star.

Q. So how did you get this gig?

A. First, I used to just go to where she did her laundry and then I just camped out in front of her house for 10 or 15 days and it worked [laughs]. I had just finished doing the Extreme tour and I got home and a friend of mine in New York who is the music director for her live stuff called me and said, “Before you say no, what would you think?’’ And he said before I say no because not a lot of people equate Rihanna with guitar and having a place for me to do anything. He said that would be an interesting aspect of it and she wants you to rock it out a bit and give it more of a different edge live.

During a recent interview about EXTREME’s new live album, Take Us Alive, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt discussed being a part of pop star Rihanna’s live band on her current world tour. An excerpt is available below:

“That was one of those unexpected little things that happens. A friend of mine, Tony Bruno, called me up when Extreme was off the road and he told me that if I wasn’t doing anything, Rihanna was looking for a guitarist. He told me that before I said no – and I guess he figured I would because there isn’t really a lot of guitar in her songs – the idea was that she wanted to make the live show a bit heavier because she’s into bands like Linkin Park and stuff like that. She wanted somebody to make things rock a little bit, which meant that I would basically get to do what I do if I took the job. I thought it was really interesting to be able to play my style of guitar over her stuff, I thought it would be fun, so I went for it. It’s cool. I wouldn’t have been interested if I wasn’t able to be myself, and it’s a challenge because the set is 24 or 25 songs that requires a different sort of guitar playing to pull it off. At one point I’m playing pop stuff and making it a bit heavier, there’s some funk and R & B, some ballads, some piano stuff, even some Hispanic flamenco, so it keeps things interesting. It certainly feels more at home than I thought it would.”

Rihanna and part of her tour crew were spotted partying in Dublin, Ireland last night (May 26). We have been told that they were celebrating the last full concert in Europe, which probably means that the next 4 concerts (in Israel, Greece, Turkey and Spain) are not going to have the same setlist.

Pixie Lott and a few other celebrities were also at the party.
