The New York Times named Rihanna’s ‘Rated R’ the number 9 album of this year! And to top that, they have awarded ‘Russian Roulette’ with the number 1 spot for the best Pop Single of 2009! Phenomenal for a late year release!

9. RIHANNA “Rated R” (Def Jam) Domestic abuse apparently gave Rihanna a motive and a narrative for her tough-as-nails fourth album. Beyond a few rueful ballads, most plainly “Stupid in Love,” she sounds armored and imperious. That’s not remotely a bad thing, and neither are the flashes of her Barbadian roots.

Last night, Rihanna headed to NYC tattoo parlor East Side Ink — one of her favorites — and had her personal motto etched indelibly into her skin forever.

“She came in at about 2:00 A.M.,” East Side Ink owner and artist Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy tells OK! exclusively. “She told me in advance she’d be coming, and then when she got there, she told me what she wanted: ‘Never a failure, always a lesson,’ but written backwards.” Bang Bang continues, “I asked her why she wanted that and she said, ‘It’s kind of my motto in life for everything.’ Instead of considering things to be mistakes, considering them lessons.”

He explains that RiRi, who he says is “doing great,” wanted the phrase done in mirror writing so she would be able to read it in the mirror.

Because this piece of body art is so personal to Rihanna, the pop superstar decided she didn’t want this new ink to be as obvious as the ones she already sports.

“She said that she wanted to do it in gray, rather than black, because she wanted it to be more subtle,” explains Bang Bang. “She didn’t want it to draw too much attention.”

Universal Music Group Chief Doug Morris, head of the world’s biggest record label, is playing ad-man to lure marketers to the Vevo music-video Web site in the latest bid to rebuild the industry.

Morris, 71, has split his time the last few months courting advertisers for Vevo, he said in a Dec. 2 interview. The site will be introduced tomorrow at an event in New York where Mariah Carey, Rihanna and Lady Gaga are scheduled to attend. AT&T Inc., McDonalds Corp. and MasterCard Inc. have agreed to advertise, according to New York-based Vevo.

Vevo, powered by Google Inc.’s YouTube and featuring music videos, concert footage, interviews and original content, allows record labels to attract premium-prices for ads while controlling how music is viewed and distributed online, Morris said. The effort to reverse the industry’s decline may be Morris’s final salvo as he prepares to hand over the reins at Universal to international music head Lucian Grainge.
