Director Anthony Mandler has left his mark on music icons such as Eminem, Beyoncé, and The Killers, but his most notable and frequent collaborator is Rihanna. The two have worked on a dozen videos together throughout her career, starting with “Unfaithful” in 2006 and most recently “Russian Roulette.”
Rap-Up.com spoke to him about taking the loyal pop star, who he calls his muse, from good girl to bad. Find out which video people believed would ruin her career, the concept that came to him in a dream, and what he thought of the Melina-directed clips for “Hard” & “Rude Boy.”
How did your relationship with Rihanna start?
I was working with Def Jam on some projects and she was kind of the big up-and-coming artist. They loved some stuff I had done with Nelly Furtado at the time, which was “Maneater,” and they wanted to try and take her image and give her a little more edge and still keep it beautiful. We just really connected. From that point on, it was “Unfaithful.” She saw me as someone who could support and drive her artistry and personality, eventually in a more sexual and womanly way. I saw it as an opportunity to work with somebody in the capacity of a muse. I really look at her like that. I feel like we’ve grown through each other, around each other, and because of each other, and will never take back the quality of work or the freedom that she’s given me to communicate. You kill for stuff like that in an artist, especially in this medium, which is filled with disloyalty and criticism. I can’t tell you how many number one videos I’ve had where the artist went somewhere else after. She’s the ultimate in loyalty.

Megan Fox admits that she is a big fan of Rihanna, but could not dare to dress-up like that.
“It would be nice to be like Rihanna and go to Burger King in six-inch heels and a mini-dress. It’s admirable. But I don’t have the motivation. I have lots of casual clothes and one side of my wardrobe is oddly grown up: pencil skirts and Prada turtlenecks for when, once in a while, I feel like going in that direction,” Fox said.
When interviewed by Us Magazine, Jay Sean said he would like to work with RiRi in the future:
Us Magazine: Are there any artists you’d like to work with in the future?
Jay Sean: Rihanna is probably at the top of my list. Beyonce and Rihanna, those are the two artists I would love to work with.
Us Magazine: Have you talked to either of them about it?
Jay Sean: I did, actually. I talked to Rihanna about it twice. Once, she came to my party in London and she came and chilled out there and had a drink. We talked about it, and then I saw her again at the Grammys. Hopefully our schedules allow it.

Ne-Yo talked about Rihanna recently. When asked which style he likes the most, Rihanna or Lady Gaga, he said:
“I like Rihanna’s fashion sense the most. Lady Gaga is definitely the most adventurous, we can say that. That’s a really, really hard decision.”
When an interviewer asked Ke$hawho she would invite to an all-girl sleepover, she said:
“Oh, my God, my fantasy would be Rihanna! We recently started being friends, and I think she is really cool. I would want Shakira to come because she is so hot. I would also invite Sarah Palin, and I would put her hand in hot water to piss herself.”
In other news, Rihanna attended a charity event last night in Phoenix, Arizona. The event, called Ante Up For Autism, was hosted by Matt Kemp.

BBC News: …It follows a similar mistake last year, where Katy Perry accepted the trophy for best international song, which should have gone to Rihanna. That did not stop Rihanna from appearing this year, when she performed her single Russian Roulette. At the end of the song, she fell a short distance off a platform at the back of the stage but quickly got up and walked off.
