At last night’s CFDA awards, Anna Wintour presented Rihanna with the 2014 Fashion Icon Award. Wintour’s introduction touched upon Bad Girl RiRi’s excellent use of fashion and how it proves “that incredible style can help take a talented young woman from a small island to the world stage, and along the way spark a lot of conversation about elegance and empowerment.” For her part, Rihanna delved into how she used fashion as a defense mechanism, saying, “Even as a child I remember thinking, She can beat me, but she cannot beat my outfit.” Watch above and read full transcripts of Anna Wintour’s and Rihanna’s CFDA speeches after the jump.

Rihanna Navy! This award is for the fans they said. It’s not easy what we do, it’s very difficult at times, it’s a lot of pressure and a lot of things and I’ve never felt comfortable being anything other than myself and I just thank my fans for being supportive and embracing that. Embracing that freedom and that liberation and we’re family, we stick together. I love you guys. Anytime we feel like giving up, and this is for everybody here, all the other musicians here. There are times when it gets really difficult, but when we think about the fans and the people who support us, that’s what keeps going. So, Rihanna Navy, I love you! Congratulations! Thank you! Navy or die!
People Magazine revealed today that Rihanna is the 2014 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Fashion Icon award winner. Read below:
When we think of Rihanna‘s style, the first word that comes to mind is fearless. The singer isn’t afraid to take some major risks on and off the red carpet. So it’s no surprise the CFDA will be celebrating her creative sartorial choices by honoring her with the 2014 Fashion Icon Award.
“We are proud to present Rihanna with the CFDA Fashion Icon Award for her impact on the industry as fashion’s most exciting ambassador in recent memory,” Steven Kolb, CEO of CFDA, said in a statement.
In the past year, the superstar has proved her love for bold statement-making looks (and that every design house on the planets wants to dress her). From left, her red wrapped-bodice custom Azzedine Alaïa gown — worn the 2013 Grammys — is still one of the most talked about best dressed moments in the PEOPLE StyleWatch offices. Next, she introduced us to the long open cardi dress (she ditched the bra underneath, of course), at the Chanel Haute Couture fashion show in Paris last July. At the American Music Awards in November, she not only dared to bare in a Jean Paul Gaultier two-piece ensemble, but she took it to the next level in the hair department sporting a doobie wrap.
For the Roc Nation pre-Grammy brunch in January, Rihanna selected a long-sleeve striped blouse and coordinating striped skirt with a thigh-high split (both Altuzarra). Finally — probably one of her most glam moments in recent months — she wore a draped yellow satin Alexandre Vauthier gown featuring a plunging neckline and dramatic slit at the Clive Davis annual Grammy party.
RiRi follows winners such as Lady Gaga, Iman, Kate Moss, and Nicole Kidman and will be presented the award on June 2 at the annual CFDA Fashion Awards.
During the pre-telecast of this year’s Grammy Awards, Rihanna won an award in the category Best Urban Contemporary Album for “Unapologetic”. She tweeted and wrote on Instagram:
$weet $urprise, pretty phucking rad! Thank you.
I cried! My phuckin lil album! We out here bruh
Rihanna and Mikky Ekko did not take home the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Stay”.
Unfortunately, RiRi did not show up at the awards show.
This is Rihanna’s 8th Grammy:
Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (Umbrella)
Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (Run This Town)
Best Rap Song (Run This Town)
Best Dance Recording (Only Girl)
Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (All Of The Lights)
Best Rap Song (All Of The Lights)
