When Rihanna released “Russian Roulette,” the lead single from Rated R on Tuesday, a lot of people were surprised that it wasn’t some empowering club banger.

And although reactions are mixed when it comes to the haunting song about an abusive relationship, Chuck Harmony, who produced it with Ne-Yo, insists that the track and the album are a reflection of Rihanna’s growth as an artist.

Harmony told MTV News that no matter how you feel about the track, the album will prove that Rihanna is the Madonna of her generation. “I sat through mix sessions and I heard some of the songs on the record. It fits in well,” he said of “Russian Roulette.”

Maybe you’ve heard of this young one “hit” singer Tiffany Evans from “Promise Ring”. Well, apparently she’s decided to make her comment about Rihanna’s new single. And that’s not just a review, it’s accusation! I would suggest finding out what “Russian Roulette” really is first! And like I wrote earlier on Twitter – it’s a metaphor people!! You gotta watch what u say. Because there are a lot of weak people in the world. They are susceptible to anything so anything you say or do some people actually do listen. So make sure its nothing bad. Its okay to be deep,but not murder deep.

Rihanna may be playing a dangerous game on her first single, “Russian Roulette,” but the man who produced the eerie ballad, Chuck Harmony, explains that when he and songwriter Ne-Yo sat down to conceptualize the feel of the track they wanted to take Rihanna’s musical vibe to a new level. They didn’t want to rehash what fans expect of the singer.

“We wanted to give her a movie. We didn’t want to just give her a three-minute song,” Harmony told MTV News. “I felt musically like everybody was gonna give like that ‘Disturbia,’ ‘SOS,’ kind of pop, uptempo stuff, and I really wanted the song that me and Ne-Yo did to stand out.”
