She may be the best friend of the world’s most famous pop star, but Melissa Forde (also known as Mdollas) is a triple threat in her own right. Not only is she a talented photographer (check the hashtag #mtfphotography for intimate moments with Rihanna), but she’s modeled for swimwear designer Lisa Marie Fernandez and now she’s launching her own line of playful bucket hats with Wrkng Title, founded by rapper Wale. Harper’s Bazaar caught up with Forde at her Opening Ceremony launch party last night to talk bucket hat icons, what it’s like to be best friends with Bad Gal Riri and her thoughts on Instagram versus Snapchat.
HB: Do you and Rihanna ever share clothes?
MF: Of course, all the time. I definitely go into her closet, and she gets in mine. If I’m getting dressed, I’ll be like “Rob, do you have a white crop top?” and she’ll be like, “Do you have a gray long-sleeve shirt?” She definitely helps to style me too.
HB: Have you ever fought over boys?
MF: Oh god no. We’ve never, I’ve never fought with any of my friends. That’s just weird, that would never happen.

Harper’s Bazaar: How did this hat collaboration come about?
Melissa Forde: I’ve known Wale for a long time, he’s family—he asked me to come work with Wkng Title to help him create some skullies, but at that time it was hot out, so I was like, “Let’s just make a bucket hat.”
HB: How did you decide on the prints and fabrics?
MF: The Rasta print was a collaboration because Wale is African and I’m from the Caribbean—so I thought that was perfect. The material for the black hat was just really different than anything I’d seen—it’s so dope. Then the pineapple print is for all the girly girls—I’m a tomboy but now it’s my favorite.
HB: Who’s are some of your bucket hat icons?
MF: LL Cool J, Run DMC, Missy Elliot. Being from the Caribbean too, growing up as babies, that’s the hat we would always wear. All the rappers are wearing it again too.
HB: What’s your favorite way to style the bucket hat?
MF: I choose my hat first, and build the rest of my wardrobe around it. I’ll wear it with anything, like a dress.
HB: How did you get the nickname MDollas?
MF: It was just a joke between my friends and I, so I started using it for my social platforms— but now everyone always calls me that, so it just stuck.
HB: Snapchat or Instagram?
MF: Snapchat. I love Snapchat, it’s so much fun.
HB: Tips for the perfect selfie?
MF: There’s no perfect selfie. I take as many photos as I can until I get the right shot that I was thinking about in my head. I’ll also ask my girls for their opinion, also with filters, I’ll be like, “This filter or no filter?”
