As soon at Rihanna’s new colorful, sassy video for “Rude Boy” hit the Internet, fans and music lovers (haters) couldn’t help but compare it to M.I.A.’s video for “Boyz.” However, that reaction isn’t one that the star or the video’s director, Melina Matsoukas, had even considered while they were shooting the clip.
“I mean, you know that the video lends from a lot of Rasta culture and ’80s Atari vibe and that’s what we went with too,” Matsoukas said. “And then afterward I was like, ‘Oh, this sucks. They tore down my video.’ And her video’s great too. It definitely wasn’t trying to rip anybody off at all — it was just our approach and the animation stuff, it had a similar vibe. We’ve seen that before with Grace Jones and Andy Warhol, so I don’t know if anybody can lay claim to anything. We’re all inspired by similar elements and it came together in that way.”
With nods to Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, the pop-art inspired video is a far cry from the pair’s work on “Hard” — but as soon as they wrapped the latter, they knew they had to work together again.
“I mean, ‘Hard’ was our first time together,” the director explained. “[Rihanna] will try anything, which is always great because you have a lot of artists who won’t do what you need them to do. She’ll go there and I definitely wanted to bring that part of her out — that fun side.”
Rihanna’s daring fashion sense is also exhibited in the video. “She loves crazy outfits! She loves the fashion. The stylist was actually my best friend. And Rihanna’s one of the only artists that will take it there and wear it and wear it well,” Matsoukas gushed. “That part is always fun. Nothing looks bad on her, so that’s even more fun. She goes with it and she really challenges you to take it a step further with the status quo.”

I’m so glad she came out and said that. People will try to discredit Rihanna, but that just keeps Rihanna’s star shining brighter and brighter. MIA’s video director didn’t come up with pop art…That’s Keith Karring, Andy Warhol and Basquiet and they were all great pop and graffiti artists, so they are the real inspiration behind the music video. Melina is so talented and amazing, I hope Rihanna continues to work with her. Go RIhanna, haters always hating because they are jealous and it’s so obvious. I’m sure half the people who said she was ripping of MIA never even saw the video in the first place, just the mob mentality of trying to take down the one on top. Pisses me off, but I know Rihanna always prevails no matter what the haters say.

The ‘Russian Roulette’ singer released ‘Rated R’ in November 2009, to mixed reactions from critics and fans alike. It has sold well though, and her record label are keen to follow up on its success and public interest while it’s still at its peak. A source at the label, who works directly with the Bajan beauty, told me: “She has the European tour through May, and there’s dates in the US through the summer, but she’ll be releasing a new album during that time too. She’s already writing songs and going in the studio every opportunity she gets, no waiting around.”
Asked about what we should expect from Rihanna’s new album, my insider continued: “Ri wants to get across that she’s moved on from the dark period she was in when recording the ‘Rated R’ songs. So expect more upbeat, dance tunes, similar to ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ and ‘Disturbia’. That’s why she wants to get the first track out over the summer, she thinks she’s come up with another summer anthem like ‘Umbrella’ was.” Wow, I so can’t wait to hear that!

@me!: If anything, they will probably do a re-issue of the album just like they did with Good Girl Gone Bad. They will include new songs in it to entice buyers to purchase the album. The album got great reviews but with a popular artist like Rihanna they probably expected much more. This happened to Britney and Madonna too but the albums that failed to sell as well as previous albums ended up being the albums that made them superstars and not just “pop stars” but “pop artists” with more to offer than just #1 singles. I love it and mark my words, years from now Rated R will be one of the overall best albums ever recording. It definitely has a spot in the top ten best pop albums of the 2000′s along with Madonna’s Confessions on a Dance Floor, MIA’a album, JT’s Future Love/Sex Sounds, Britney’s Blackout and a few others. These albums may not have sold the best but they were cutting edge and very well put together albums from song 1 to the last song.
