Rihanna has had a difficult past 12 months in the aftermath of her assault by her ex-boyfriend. But the “Hard” superstar has endured, by being both outspoken about her experience in hopes of helping others and by channeling her experience into Rated R, her most rounded effort to date. She told MTV News last year that she “vented” on the project.
Don’t expect her next album to be as dark as Rated R, though.
Rihanna said the follow-up, which has no timetable set yet, will be less intense. “Rated R, I love the sound of it, in terms of the bass,” Rihanna explained. “I really like the bottom, the grime of it. But if I were to combine that with more energetic, up-tempo pop records, then I think that will be a happy marriage. And that’s where we’ll probably go next.”
Rated R was inspired mostly by Rihanna’s ordeal in the wake of her and her ex-boyfriend breakup. The singer was the subject of media headlines worldwide. She kept away from the spotlight after a brief reunion with her ex-boyfriend following their altercation. But when Rihanna returned, she had an album that chronicled her months away from the glare.
“This album is an expression of all those feelings that I went through in the last eight months, just different emotions,” she said shortly after Rated R’s release. “All of it isn’t angry, all of it isn’t dark and sad, ’cause I didn’t go through that the whole time. That was part of it. It was really a roller coaster, and you get that when you’re listening to the album.”

I can’t wait for a new album. Not that I don’t love RR, I am just anticipating the excitment of a new era. The new album shots, going crazy for the debut of the first single/video, guessing the name of her song…..it was fun. And, I love the fact that she is lightening it up a bit.
Also, I remember when Amazon had RR listed as a double disc. I wonder why they changed it. CA, BS, LG and Bey are coming out with news albums this year. A lot of competition.

Rihanna’s music has always been honest and reflective of where she is in her life. Rated R is a bit darker than her past work but I must say for someone so young to articulate her pain so well on a record without depressing you is amazing 5/5 in my book. Of course she is in much better/happier place and so expect such records. Great job RiRi I salute your honesty, forget perfume put your STRENGTH in a bottle and sell that I would buy it!

You have to understand to have huge sales numbers you have to sale bug with listners outside of your core audience. Right now the vast majority of music consumers are not checking for music with a message…they like tik tok and just dance.
Rated R is by far the most well thought out, truthful, soulful record from anyone in years.
Maison tweeted about how Rihanna is 2 years ahead of the game and she is sp sp right I bet you money next feb. when she racks up a ton of Grammys everybody and thier mama will be recording “dark” albums.

I just saw that RUDE BOY is #15 on iTunes yes… but the clean version is at #233 (to make the top 200 a song must sell around 10.000 copies) so lets think that the clean version is selling around that number of copies… that would add 8-9K more to the version that’s at #15… So the sales for rude boy must be around 80.000 more or less…
and Hard sales are still around 50K
So not bad at all

Hey RD Fam! Good Morning!! As far as the poll goes we need to look at things for a short and long term perspective!
Short term: Rih needs to continue to do promo/appearances in the US for Rated R – It is an epic album afterall and she needs to have a stronghold in the US. Right now I am not worried about the other markets because she seems to be doing pretty damn well in the UK and in Aussie Land!
Long term: Rih needs to do movies!!! I am dying to see her on the big screen in a movie theater! I am hoping she can fit at least one movie in!!! Rihanna is a perfectionist and she would not want to put herself out there if the “project” wasn’t right!! But hell she needs to a damn Beyawnce and just put one movie out there even if she thinks it’s not perfect just she can get it going – do a silly comedy first and then do more serious stuff later!! Here are my thoughts on this new album situation.Rated R needs more promotion and more time to grow, it is a fantastic album and alot of the people bashing this album i can assure you either listen to it , downloaded it or better yet bought a copy.Rihanna is not a repeat artist, and thank god she isn’t that’s what made her stardom to the top.She has a very unique voice one that cannot be duplicate, she can sing R&B, POP, POP ROCK ,Dance hall and HIP HOP.The sole reason why she is so big on the internationl scene is becasue she is and alternative Aritst.There are not many of these artist around, do a search and you would understand what i’m saying.Americans as of recent seem to only cater to alot of fast pop music as of late and that’s why you have so many one hit wonders, who fade so fast. As much as I love her and Matt together, she needs to stay focuas and not be sidetracted by this relationship thing. To much attention is being brought to it and she needs to stay focus on promoting her album.Matt was right on track when he said he has to stay focus on baseball when it’s time to play and get serious, she needs to follow his lead and do the same. As far as i’m concern the love fest is over and she needs to get back to her tour and promoting her album Rated R , along the way she can prepare to record new songs for her next album but not yet it’s to soon.

Ditto #265 NYA. I’ll also add that her success outside of the US has something to do with the fact that she’s not American. I love that you called her an alternative artist. I grew up on rock music that magazine scribes called alternative. It wasn’t really that different from mainstream or old school rock. It was just A LOT better than other big guitar rock at the time.
That’s how I see Rihanna. She’s the first pop star I’ve taken an interest in for more than ten years. She’s just better than everyone else. I think she’s in her nascent stage of true greatness but she’s on her way. She can only get better.

To the fans who are bashing the album and want a new album .In my opinion there are selfish fans and have no respect or appreciation for the Aritst that they assumingly love. If you take into consideration the over all picture of what Rihanna went through, as a true fan your human side would/should kick in and understand and appreciate Rated R for what it is and really means.To me as a fan she has reached out and shared her most personal and painful experience with us all, she has let her guard down and deceided to let us in her private Life. For that alone I will always support her decision all the way no matter what music she puts out.I will trust her decisions, even when the album may not be what i wanted to hear from her.Listening to Rated R ,my heart ache/hurt to the point of where I cried for RIHANNA, for those of us who have love so deaply and had our hearts broken can related to the pain and anger this young beautiful woman has gone through.Songs like Stupid in love, Russian Roulette, Fire Bomb, PHOTOGRAPHS, G4L, COLD CASE LOVE and the LAST SONG. We never know…. She has some time now to record some songs if she wants to re-release the album. And she clearly says that she has some weeks off here and there.
And I bet there are songs that are already recorded that are being reserved for later on. So who knows???
I think that she will re-release the album, coz with just the 13 songs in Rated R wont make it til the end of 2011..
I think she will actually re-release it in september-december time (depending on the success of the singles)

riri is proving to be a genisus artist. she’s experimental and keeps tapping into different territories, with her craft. from island girl sound to pop/r&b/ballads/dancehall/rock/ goth are whatever people try to label as dark. which is still just art and she’s just 22 years of age. i find that an absolutely incredible features that she have. the creativity and depth of some of the music she has put out like “rated r ” and the song russian roulette and hard theres a lot of artist who don’t get to do until much later in their careers basicly thats what i admire about her she keeps reinventing herself and her artistry she keeps challenging herself and shes putting out very good music indeed!!!!!! and now “rude boy” which is a banger!!!!!!
