Friday’s interview with Rihanna sent ratings for ABC’s “20/20″ soaring.

The newsmagazine notched a 2.7 rating/9 share among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. Friday, dramatically higher than the show’s usual Nielsen number (in recent weeks, a 1.6). It was by far the top-rated show of the night in the key demographic, and the best adults 18-49 performance by the newsmag in nine months.

The chat proved particularly potent with viewers 18-34, giving “20/20″ its best ratings in that demo (2.3/9) in nearly three years.

Among all viewers, “20/20″ was seen by 8.18 million people, winning its 10 p.m. timeslot by a hair over CBS’s “Numbers” (8 million). NBC’s 9 p.m. installment of “Law & Order” was Friday’s No. 1 show in viewers, bringing in 8.4 million pairs of eyeballs.

    10. So what she's in the news for the wrong reasons. WHEN PEOPLE STOP TALKING ABOUT HER THEN WE NEED TO WORRY.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS BAD PUBLICITY.

    20. i an glad that rihanna finally has spoken out on that dreadful night. now she can get down to business . she can keep her focus more on her body of work instead of dealing with her pass and in time it will ger easier for her . love is hard and it takes a while for the feeling to ease somewhat. nobody knows how she has been feeling this last year , but one thing is for sure she will be able to stay strong and do what she has to do to get her business taken care of. shes a smart young artist and have got a lot going on that on the ball and she will make it in the industr because of her determination and dedication..

    22. Rihanna, I applaud you for doing this interview, the domestic violence incident generated a lot of negative publicity for you and this interview was your positive publicity. I admire your strength and the wisdom you possess at such a young age. I can relate to you because, I’ve been in domestic violence situations before and it is so true when you advise others not to make their decisions based on the heart, that’s the number 1 thing most people don’t understand about physical abuse, the fact that you cannot stop loving someone over night, you wish you could and you do feel ashamed for having those feelings. When abuse happens and the abuser tells you they are sorry and it would never happen again, you want to believe it and make all the wrongs right but 9 times out of 10, it will happen again, it will take some serious counseling to correct their mindset and it will not be an easy task. People don’t change overnight.

    23. People we shouldn't care about the haters coming on this site. If they come on this site, it means Rihanna is so interesting that they want to talk about her.

    24. Its a damn shame that the only group of people that will stand by the side of a black woman are white people.”

Interesting point. I did note that in the initial aftermath of this incident, I was struck by a commentary written by a white woman who was physically abused by her husband on CNN. She found a commonality with Rihanna.

If you compare to the reactions to this case in the black and white communities, there does seem to be a suggestion that violence, on some level, is perceived as an acceptable form of expression/reaction by certain members of the black community, both male and female (not to say that there aren’t plenty of abusive men of all races). I also thought this may serve as a larger example of how violence against black women is regarded — do some of us, on some level, think sisters somehow deserve to be mistreated, or are incapable of being victims?
